English grandmother cottage clock with swan neck arch top from first half of 19 th. century. 30 hour weight driven movement ( going and striking train are composed side by side ) with Huyghens type endless-chain winding mechanism. Anchor escapement and long pendulum, locking-plate striking on bell. Date indication. Hand sawn iron hand. Pained arch dial showing flowers in the corners and a battle ship in the arch, Roman hour numerals, signed: Sam Collins Thornbury. While a maker named Collins did not exist, a maker named Samuel Collings Thornbury could be found at Brian Looms, Watchmakers And Clockmakers Of The World, Volume 2 , 1976, page 49: Samuel Collings Thornbury, Glos.1830-1870.
